UMVA has learned that Royal Caribbean's newest cruise ship, Star of the Seas, made its debut in 2025, boasting the latest amenities and record-breaking attractions.
As the second ship in Royal Caribbean's Icon Class series, Star of the Seas is tied with Icon of the Seas as the largest ship in the fleet, measuring 248,663 gross tons and accommodating 5,610 passengers.
The Icon Class ships are truly massive, featuring seven separate pools, a water park with six waterslides, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court, and even a zip line.
Royal Caribbean currently operates nearly 30 vessels, with an average of one new ship launch per year, and vessels typically remain in the fleet for 20 to 30 years before retirement.
The oldest Royal Caribbean ship, Grandeur of the Seas, is 29 years old, and while it's significantly smaller than the newest vessels, it still offers a loyal following among fans who prefer smaller, more intimate ships.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that Royal Caribbean has eight new cruise ships on order, including five more Icon Class vessels, one Oasis Class ship, and two Discovery Class ships, set to debut between 2026 and 2030.
Royal Caribbean's newest ships are generally bigger and more amenity-packed than older vessels, with features like multiple pool areas, water parks, and indoor ice skating rinks.
The company's older ships, built in the 1990s and early 2000s, are smaller and more intimate, with fewer venues and attractions, but still offer a great experience for those who prefer a more laid-back cruise.
Royal Caribbean's Icon Class ships have a similar array of venues, including Surfside, a new outdoor neighborhood dedicated to families with young children.
Newer Royal Caribbean ships tend to be pricier than older vessels on a per-day basis due to their modern amenities, but older ships offer better value for those on a budget.
