MAYOR'S SHOCKING CLAIM: Chicago Restaurants ACCUSED of SLAVERY!

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson ignited a fierce debate, drawing a direct line between the restaurant industry’s tipping practices and the legacy of slavery. His impassioned defense of eliminating the tipped wage followed a contentious City Council battle where his veto of a policy halting the wage phaseout narrowly stood.

The core of the dispute centers on a plan to raise the base pay for tipped workers to the full minimum wage by 2028. Restaurant owners vehemently oppose the change, predicting increased prices and potential job losses. Johnson, however, framed the issue as a matter of racial and economic justice.

“You just watched the entire city council in transparency try to take wages away from the very people who are part of an industry that has its ties to slavery,” Johnson declared, challenging the council’s decision. He positioned the wage increase as a form of reparations, directly funding it with city resources.

The mayor’s comments stemmed from a question regarding the transparency of his newly formed Reparations Task Force. Johnson forcefully asserted his commitment to addressing historical injustices, stating plainly, “I’m a black man in America calling for the reparations of black people.”

The task force, launched in June 2024 with a $500,000 allocation, has begun a community engagement initiative called “Repair Chicago.” This includes a bus tour designed to document the systemic harms experienced by Black residents throughout the city.

A spokesperson for the mayor’s office further elaborated on the historical connection, explaining that the reliance on tips became widespread among “white employers in the South” after the Emancipation Proclamation. This system, they argued, perpetuated economic inequality.

The spokesperson emphasized that many Black workers, particularly women, continue to depend on tips and subminimum wages for their livelihood. They characterized the practice as a uniquely American issue, and lauded Johnson’s leadership in advocating for fair and stable wages.

Johnson’s stance underscores a broader movement to dismantle a system perceived as inherently exploitative, rooted in a history of racial discrimination. He believes ensuring a living wage for all workers is a crucial step towards true economic equity and a form of restorative justice.
