Under the guise of a single mother, an undercover investigator revealed that messages flow from a flood of strangers who promise money and then demand explicit photos or videos. The first reply is often a casual offer, only to morph into a relentless pursuit of sexual content.
One lender asked for a selfie holding a specific number of fingers—an absurd verification that quickly revealed the true intention behind the “loan.” Another demanded a naked photo, while a third urged the victim to open multiple bank accounts, a classic tactic for laundering illicit funds.
These predatory exchanges leave victims emotionally shattered. One woman who worked in finance feared losing her job after a failed regulated loan, while a police officer, earning £50,000 a year, felt trapped into a second job as a support worker to cover expenses.
“It felt like they were deriving pleasure from desperation,” the investigator said, describing the abhorrent moment when a lender asked her to film her empty cupboards, exposing her financial ruin as a fetish.
