Pope Leo Appeals to Schismatic Catholic Group to Avoid Committing a Grave Sin

Pope Leo XIV issued an urgent appeal Tuesday to a prominent traditionalist Catholic group, urging it to abandon plans to consecrate four bishops without the Vatican’s authorization. The pope warned that the proposed action would constitute a "sin of extreme gravity" and risk deepening a longstanding division within the Church.

In a letter addressed to the leader of the Society of St. Pius X, Rev. Davide Pagliarani, the pope implored the group to reconsider its decision ahead of a scheduled ceremony in Econe, Switzerland. The event, set for Wednesday, would see the ordination of bishops outside the Church’s formal structures, a move the pope described as a threat to ecclesiastical unity.

Church law classifies the consecration of bishops without papal approval as a schismatic act, automatically excommunicating both the ordaining bishop and the recipients. Pope Leo emphasized the spiritual consequences, stating that such a step would jeopardize the sacraments for the faithful tied to the society.

The Society of St. Pius X, founded in the aftermath of the Second Vatican Council, has long opposed post-1960s reforms and advocates for the preservation of pre-Vatican II traditions. The group maintains that its actions stem from a "state of necessity," claiming it must provide clergy to serve its members independently of Vatican oversight.

This dispute marks a significant test for Pope Leo’s leadership, which has prioritized reconciliation within the Church. Since his election, the pontiff has sought to bridge divides with traditionalist factions while upholding doctrinal unity. The society’s defiance echoes a historic 1988 crisis, when its founder, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, was excommunicated after consecrating bishops without permission—a rupture later partially resolved in 2009.

Despite ongoing dialogue, the Society of St. Pius X remains unaffiliated with the Vatican’s formal hierarchy. The group has grown substantially in recent decades, boasting a global network of priests, seminarians, and lay members, solidifying its status as the largest traditionalist movement outside Catholicism’s official framework.
