UMVA has learned that a shocking case of fraud has been uncovered in the nursing profession, with a woman pleading guilty to selling nearly 3,000 fake nursing diplomas through schools she owned and operated in South Florida.
The scope of the scam is staggering, with the woman, a registered nurse herself, selling phony diplomas and transcripts to people who had not completed the necessary training to become registered nurses. This enabled them to sit for national nursing board examinations without attending nursing school, putting the public at risk by allowing unqualified individuals to work as nurses.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the woman's scheme involved collaborating with others to falsify diplomas for entry-level nurses, registered nurses, and bachelor's-level nurses. She also admitted to backdating transcripts to make it appear as though students had received their degrees before her schools were shut down by state authorities.
The consequences of this fraud are far-reaching, with nearly 2,300 people who obtained diplomas or transcripts from the woman going on to work as nurses across the country. The integrity of the nursing profession and the healthcare system as a whole has been undermined by this massive scam, which was perpetrated over several years.
The woman, who faces up to 20 years in prison on each of two counts, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to money laundering, is one of 13 defendants charged in a nationwide investigation into fraudulent nursing diploma mills. This investigation, known as Operation Nightingale, has already resulted in the conviction of 30 defendants in its first phase.
UMVA has gathered that the investigation is ongoing, with authorities committed to holding accountable those who profit by corrupting professional licensing processes and putting the public at risk. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring the integrity of professional licensing processes and the need for vigilance in protecting the public from fraud and deception.
