A terrifying moment unfolded at ZooAmerica over the weekend when an 18-month-old toddler sustained injuries after encountering a wolf. The child, described as unsupervised, managed to breach a perimeter fence and reach the wolf enclosure, a sequence of events that led to immediate police action.
The toddler’s parents, residents of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, now face misdemeanor child endangerment charges. Reports indicate they had momentarily moved approximately 25 to 30 feet away, distracted by their cellphones, creating the opportunity for the child to wander into the restricted area.
According to ZooAmerica’s statement, the child crawled under an exterior fence and then reached through the metal enclosure surrounding the wolf habitat. A wolf then approached and made contact with the child’s hand – a reaction the zoo characterized as consistent with natural animal behavior, not aggression.
Crucially, the child never entered the wolf’s enclosure itself, and thankfully, the injuries were described as minor. The wolf pack consists of three animals: Twister, a male, and his sisters, Hazel and Freya, all of whom were involved in this unsettling incident.
