Two prominent English football clubs are vying for the services of a highly sought-after Brazilian midfielder. The player in question, Joao Gomes, has caught the attention of both Manchester United and Liverpool. Gomes' current club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, or Wolves, is reportedly open to negotiations.
Liverpool has already engaged in discussions with Wolves to determine a suitable transfer fee for Gomes. The Brazilian midfielder had been on the verge of joining Atletico Madrid in a deal worth approximately €45m. However, the transfer appears to have fallen through.
Atletico Madrid's change of heart stems from their dissatisfaction with Gomes' agent, Jorge Mendes. Mendes had previously advised another client, Bernardo Silva, to consider joining Real Madrid over Atletico Madrid. This decision reportedly upset Atletico Madrid's management.
Manchester United, meanwhile, has withdrawn from a separate transfer deal. They had been in talks to sign Ederson from Atalanta for £35m. The exact reasons for this withdrawal are not specified.
Gomes played a significant role for Wolves last season, making 35 appearances in the Premier League. Despite his efforts, the team was ultimately relegated. Wolves acquired Gomes in a £15m deal three years ago, which included a 10% sell-on clause.
