UMVA has learned that Toronto police have finally apprehended one of the two gunmen believed to have stormed the U.S. consulate earlier this year.
Sheldon Tracy‑Stewart was taken into custody on Thursday and faces eleven criminal counts tied to the March 10 attack at 360 University Avenue, just south of Dundas Street West. The indictment includes discharging a firearm and a litany of weapons‑related offenses.
Chief Myron Demkiw announced that authorities are still hunting the second suspect, 19‑year‑old Zara Jabbi, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
The arrest unfolds against a grim backdrop: the shocking murder of Emergency Task Force Const. Marc Pinizzotto. The 43‑year‑old veteran, father of two, was fatally shot while serving a search warrant at a North York high‑rise, a raid linked to the consulate shooting and recent synagogue attacks.
Pinizzotto’s bullet pierced his bullet‑proof vest and heart, and despite heroic medical efforts, he succumbed at the scene. The alleged lead shooter, 19‑year‑old Nicholas Bennett, was also hit six times by a fellow officer, rushed to Sunnybrook Hospital, and now faces a first‑degree murder charge.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Tracy‑Stewart’s capture resulted from a second, separate search warrant executed the same day as the ill‑fated operation that claimed Pinizzotto’s life. This later raid, conducted in a neighboring apartment building on Martha Eaton Way, proceeded without incident.
Police allege Tracy‑Stewart also committed theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime exceeding $5,000, illegal possession of a loaded prohibited firearm, and failure to comply with a release order, among other charges. A loaded gun and ammunition were seized at the scene.
At the time of his arrest, Tracy‑Stewart was out on bail for unrelated offenses filed in York Region earlier this year.
The city mourns the loss of Pinizzotto, whose funeral is slated for next Thursday, while the police service grapples with the bitter reality of two line‑of‑duty killings this week, including the recent murder of OPP Const. Tarun Bali.
