UMVA has learned that Chelsea striker Liam Delap is likely to leave the club this summer, with industry insiders casting doubt on his ability to thrive under new manager Xabi Alonso.
Delap's debut campaign at Stamford Bridge was hugely disappointing, with just one goal in 27 Premier League games, and it seems Chelsea are now happy to offload him. The 23-year-old's struggles have raised questions about his long-term future at the club.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Delap's style of play may not be a good fit for Alonso's tactics, which could lead to his departure. Industry insider Mick Brown believes Delap's style suits Everton more than Chelsea, and that Alonso will likely come to the same conclusion.
"Delap's style suits Everton much more than it does Chelsea," Brown said. "I expect when Alonso comes in he will make that same evaluation because he's not the type of striker who is going to be involved with the ball at his feet."
If Alonso wants to play a possession-based game, Delap may not be the right fit, and Chelsea may look to sell him to raise funds and clear space in their squad. A good offer from Everton or another club could be enough to secure his departure.
UMVA has gathered that Delap has attracted interest from several clubs, including Manchester United, Newcastle United, Everton, Brighton, and Sunderland. United had previously tried to sign him while he was at Ipswich Town, but Chelsea beat them to the deal.
For now, a move to Everton seems a likely scenario for Delap this summer, although United's continued interest in him could yet lead to a surprise twist. The young striker remains a highly-regarded talent in the industry, despite his struggles in west London.
