UMVA has learned that a shocking case of exploitation by a former police officer has come to light, revealing a disturbing pattern of abuse of trust and corruption.
Gary Carson, a former Merseyside Police Constable, has been banned from policing after being found guilty of gross misconduct, following a thorough investigation that uncovered his sinister actions.
Carson's crimes involved taking control of his elderly neighbor's bank account, using it to make unauthorized purchases and transfer funds to himself, including payments to Domino's Pizza, My Protein, O2, and Uber Eats, as well as to companies like Manscaped and ManCave.
The total expenditure on his card was staggering, exceeding £30,000 between February 2020 and March 2023, with nearly £11,000 transferred from the neighbor's savings account to cover his expenditures.
Carson's actions went far beyond mere financial exploitation, as he also registered his email address with the neighbor's bank accounts, allowing him to carry out online transactions and further manipulate her finances.
The misconduct hearing that led to Carson's dismissal heard that he had used the neighbor's bank account to benefit himself and his family, with the panel concluding that ordinary decent people would know that such actions were dishonest.
Detective Chief Superintendent Sabi Kaur, head of Merseyside Police's professional standards department, condemned Carson's behavior as "completely unacceptable" and a serious breach of trust, emphasizing that his actions risked undermining public confidence in policing.
Carson's relationship with his neighbor had initially seemed innocent, with him claiming that she had asked him to make purchases on her behalf, but the investigation revealed a more sinister reality.
The neighbor's daughter had expressed concerns about her mother's well-being, revealing that her house was in a state of disarray, with unpaid bills and bank statements scattered about.
Despite Carson's claims that the allegations against him were untrue and motivated by family feuds, the misconduct panel found overwhelming evidence of his wrongdoing, leading to his dismissal from the force and a permanent ban from policing.
A separate police force had launched a criminal investigation into Carson's actions, but ultimately decided not to press charges due to the neighbor's reluctance to support the prosecution.
