The site, Tell el-Farama, was once the thriving city of Pelusium. For centuries, scholars have speculated a connection between Pelusium and “Sin,” a city ominously referenced in the Book of Ezekiel as a target of divine wrath. This recent discovery deepens that historical intrigue.
At the heart of the complex lies a colossal basin, a breathtaking 115 feet in diameter. This wasn’t merely a structure; it was a sacred space, meticulously engineered to capture and hold the life-giving waters of the Nile River.
For over eight centuries, from the second century B.C. to the sixth century A.D., the basin pulsed with ritual significance. The water, infused with rich Nile silt, wasn’t just water – it was a tangible link to Pelusios, the god for whom the city and the complex were named. His name itself derives from the Greek word for “mud,” highlighting the sacred connection.
