The FBI New York Joint Terrorism Task Force is investigating a firebombing incident outside the New York City federal building, home to the FBI New York field office and New York immigration court. The suspect, a man with a history of anti-ICE activity, was arrested at the scene on Monday morning.
Law enforcement officials have confirmed that the suspect had a history of anti-ICE activity, and a collection of weapons was discovered in his belongings. The man was seen dumping a bucket containing flammable liquid and other objects on the north side of the building before setting it ablaze and running away. Additional footage shows the suspect igniting the incendiary device.
A sign found in the man's belongings read "ICE off our streets," and officers were seen searching through his cart and retrieving a knife, hammer, and what appear to be pellet guns. The FBI has not released further information about the suspect or his motives.
FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement that the individual who deployed the incendiary device is in custody and that two minor injuries have been reported. The FBI JTTF is investigating the incident, and local police are supporting the federal investigation.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani released a statement condemning the incident but stopped short of condemning the anti-ICE ideology he has promoted in the past. He expressed relief that no one was seriously injured and pledged to ensure the safety of all New Yorkers.
