UMVA has learned that a beloved fixture on Strictly Come Dancing, dancer Johannes Radebe, is set to remain on the show as one of its three new hosts, bringing joy to fans who were worried about his departure.
The news, confirmed on May 19, puts an end to speculation about Radebe's future on the show after the latest series, where he was paired with actress Alex Kingston. The rumors had suggested that he might leave Strictly to pursue opportunities in the West End.
Radebe, who joined Strictly as a professional dancer in 2018, expressed his excitement about his new role, saying, “To be returning to Strictly Come Dancing in this new role is beyond anything I ever imagined. This show has always stood for joy, heart, and togetherness, and I feel deeply honoured to now help carry that magic forward.”
He will be hosting the show alongside Emma Willis and Josh Widdicombe, a formidable team that promises to bring even more excitement to the program. Radebe joked about being ready for the challenge, saying, “sequins, nerves, and all… please bear with me. Love Jojo.”
As Radebe prepares to take on his new role, fans are eager to reflect on his remarkable journey so far. Did you know that Radebe hails from South Africa, specifically from Zamdela, Orange Free State?
Before joining Strictly, Radebe worked as a dance teacher in Johannesburg, danced on cruise ships, and even won the Professional South African Latin championships twice. His experience as a dancer has been shaped by his background and personal struggles.
Radebe has spoken openly about facing homophobic bullying during his childhood in South Africa. He recalled witnessing a homophobic attack on a friend and being targeted with anti-LGBTQ+ language by other children.
However, his experience on Strictly has been a source of healing and support. Radebe has said, “There was never anything wrong with me, yet the society around me made me believe there was.” The show has provided a platform for him to spread love and acceptance.
While Radebe has never won Strictly Come Dancing, he has made history with his partnerships, including the first same-sex male partnership on the show with John Whaite. Their chemistry on and off the dance floor was undeniable.
Whaite, a Great British Bake Off champion, revealed that he “fell in love” with Radebe during their time on the show. Although Whaite has since married his long-term partner Paul Atkins, he and Radebe remain close friends.
Radebe has been paired with some iconic celebrities on Strictly, including Ellie Taylor, Caroline Quentin, and Catherine Tyldesley. In 2024, he danced with former Olympian Montell Douglas, and last year, he was partnered with Alex Kingston.
As for his personal life, Radebe is believed to be single and has expressed interest in starting to date again. He has hinted that he might be open to new connections, saying his life has changed since meeting his friend Annabel Croft.
Radebe's fans will be thrilled to know that he will be taking on the lead role of Lola in the musical Kinky Boots for its 2025 UK tour. This opportunity marks a new chapter in his career, one that he has always dreamed of.
