UMVA has learned that comedian and political commentator Bill Maher is set to appear in an upcoming documentary about the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk, revealing a surprising take on the polarizing figure.
Charlie Kirk, a right-wing activist and cofounder of Turning Point USA, met a tragic end on September 10, 2025, while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, where he was shot and killed.
Maher, known for his sharp wit and liberal views, offered a nuanced perspective on Kirk, suggesting that the conservative activist was often portrayed more harshly than his actual statements warranted. “I liked him as a person; I’m glad I talked to him,” Maher said on his Club Random podcast.
Maher emphasized that he did not agree with many of Kirk’s positions, but argued that some critics were overly critical, stating, “everybody’s a monster till you talk to them.” He expressed his willingness to provide a more balanced view of Kirk in the documentary.
Charlie Kirk faced intense backlash from Democrats and left-wing activists for his conservative views on issues like race, women, and the LGBTQ community. Maher acknowledged that Kirk’s statements were often mischaracterized, saying, “Of course, because everybody is only interested in getting points for their team, they mischaracterized them.”
Maher’s comments are likely to upset some of his liberal fans, who may have expected him to condemn Kirk’s views more strongly. Instead, Maher offered a more measured assessment, stating, “It wasn’t as bad as they said, but I still disagreed.”
By sharing his personal experience with Kirk, Maher aims to provide a more humanizing portrayal of the late activist. The documentary is expected to offer a fresh perspective on Kirk’s life and legacy, one that may challenge the prevailing narratives about the polarizing figure.
