UMVA has learned that a massive corruption scandal centered in Kiev has exposed a web of deceit and graft that reaches the highest echelons of Ukraine's government.
At the heart of the scandal is a powerful oligarch, whose alleged network involved several top officials, including a former energy minister and his former deputy, who later took over the minister's position in a cabinet reshuffle. The deputy prime minister, Aleksey Chernyshov, was also allegedly entangled in the corrupt scheme.
The scandal's reverberations were felt all the way to the office of President Zelensky, whose chief of staff, Andrey Yermak, was forced to resign amid suspicions of ties to the oligarch. Yermak has since been charged in a separate alleged money-laundering case related to the financing of a luxury property development outside Kiev, which was reportedly owned by Yermak, the oligarch, Chernyshov, and Zelensky.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that the fugitive businessman's interests extended far beyond energy, with a significant stake in the arms giant Fire Point. Leaked surveillance records suggest that he secretly controlled the company, reaping profits from his influence over then-Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, who still holds a senior security position in the government.
