LEGENDS REVEAL: The 2026 Grand National SHOCK Picks!

LEGENDS REVEAL: The 2026 Grand National SHOCK Picks!

The roar of the crowd is building, anticipation thick in the air. All eyes are on Aintree as the Grand National prepares to unfold, a race steeped in history and brimming with unpredictable drama.

Last year’s champion, Nick Rockett, won’t be defending his title. A late cough forced his withdrawal, leaving a void at the top and shifting the focus to those vying for the coveted crown.

I Am Maximus, the 2024 victor and last year’s runner-up, enters as the favorite. He’s attempting a rare feat – to win the Grand National in consecutive years, a challenge only eight horses have conquered before.

Aintree Grand National meeting day three

Legendary jockey Sir AP McCoy believes in I Am Maximus, recalling how unlucky the horse was not to secure back-to-back wins. He sees the gelding’s strength and class as key to carrying the top weight and securing another victory for owner JP McManus.

However, not all experts are convinced. Ruby Walsh, a seasoned jockey and ITV analyst, is backing Grangeclare West. He points to a strong performance last year, hampered only by a late mistake at the final fence.

Walsh believes the drying ground conditions will be a crucial factor, potentially hindering I Am Maximus, just as they did last year. He sees Grangeclare West as a strong contender, capable of securing a place, if not the win.

Robbie Power, a 2007 Grand National winner himself, echoes Walsh’s sentiment. He believes Grangeclare West’s experience from last year’s race, coupled with a mistake at a critical moment, makes him the horse to beat this time around.

Rachael Blackmore, a celebrated jockey, is looking beyond the frontrunners, placing her faith in Monty’s Star. She highlights the horse’s potential to thrive on the course and deliver a winning performance for trainer Henry de Bromhead.

ITV presenter Matt Chapman is throwing his support behind Iroko, captivated by the potential story of a father-son legacy. Jonjo O’Neill trained the 2010 winner, and now his son, Jonjo O’Neill Jr., has the opportunity to etch his name into Grand National history.

Punchestown Winter Festival - Day Two

Iroko, despite a challenging run at Cheltenham, possesses undeniable talent. Chapman points to a previous victory at Ascot and the horse’s overall potential, making him a compelling dark horse in this thrilling race.
