A chilling discovery unfolded in April 2024 within the opulent walls of a £4 million Airbnb near Hyde Park. Kamonnan Thiamphanit, known to friends as Angela, was found lifeless, the victim of a brutal stabbing.
The scene was a stark contrast to the property’s grandeur – a Grade II-listed building on Stanhope Place in Bayswater, now marked by tragedy. Police arrived at approximately 8:30 am on Monday, April 8th, to find the 27-year-old with multiple wounds, and despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
For two years, the investigation remained open, a relentless pursuit of justice for Angela and her grieving loved ones. The case spanned continents, leading investigators to Dubai and ultimately resulting in the extradition of a suspect.
Enzo Bettamio, an 18-year-old, was brought back to the UK on Friday, the culmination of a joint effort between the Metropolitan Police and specialist lawyers within the Crown Prosecution Service’s extradition units. He is now facing charges in connection with Angela’s murder.
The investigation wasn’t without its complexities. Prior to the tragic discovery, friends of Ms. Thiamphanit, who held Chinese, Hong Kong, and Thai nationality, had contacted police twice with concerns. The initial case was classified as a medium-risk missing person inquiry.
Officers were ultimately forced to enter the property, a decision that revealed the horrifying truth. The Metropolitan Police voluntarily referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct to review the handling of those initial calls and the subsequent escalation of the case.
Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell acknowledged the immense pain endured by Angela’s family and friends, expressing sincere gratitude for their unwavering support throughout the difficult investigation. Bettamio is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, bringing a new chapter to this heartbreaking case.
