UMVA has learned that a shocking ambush in a hospital emergency room has left an Indiana sheriff's deputy fighting for his life after being shot three times by a stranded motorist he had stopped to help.
The deputy, a 12-year veteran of the force, was airlifted to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition. The alleged gunman, a Chicago resident, was arrested in the woods near the hospital just minutes after the shooting.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the deputy had stopped to assist the motorist on a rural road around 6:45 a.m. and later took him to a hospital at his request. But once at the hospital, the officer learned that the suspect may have been involved in an earlier crime, sparking a deadly confrontation.
In a stunning turn of events, the suspect produced a firearm and shot the officer in the emergency room, authorities said. The officer's actions were a tragic reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement every day.
The suspect fled into a nearby wooded area but was quickly apprehended, and a handgun believed to have been in his possession was recovered. Authorities have not specified the crime the suspect is allegedly connected to, but charges are pending against him.
The La Porte County Sheriff's Office has described the shooting as an "isolated incident" and assured the public that there is no immediate threat. The Indiana State Police are leading the investigation into the shooting.
The deputy, who comes from a long lineage of law enforcement, is married and has no children. His family and colleagues are rallying around him during this incredibly challenging time.
The hospital where the shooting occurred has reported that its emergency department remains on ambulance bypass, but walk-in patients are being accepted through the main entrance. All other services and departments are operating normally.
The community is coming together to support the deputy and his family, with the La Porte County Sheriff calling on friends and neighbors to "rise up, rally together, and lift Deputy Jon Samuelson and his family in prayer and support."
