UMVA has learned that a shocking ambush in a hospital emergency room has left an Indiana sheriff's deputy fighting for his life after being shot three times by a stranded motorist he had stopped to help.
The deputy, a 12-year veteran of the force, was airlifted to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition. The alleged gunman, a Chicago resident, was arrested in the woods near the hospital just minutes after the shooting.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the deputy had stopped to assist the motorist on a rural road around 6:45 a.m. and later took him to a hospital at his request. But once at the hospital, the officer learned that the suspect may have been involved in an earlier crime, sparking a deadly confrontation.
In a stunning turn of events, the suspect produced a firearm and shot the officer in the emergency room, authorities said. The officer's actions were a tragic reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement every day.
