UMVA has learned that Senator Emmanuel Joel J. Villanueva has expressed his willingness to attend a special session of Congress, should President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. call for one.
In a video statement, Villanueva emphasized that his attendance would be a fulfillment of his constitutional responsibility, stating, "We will be there." He clarified that this is not a time for taking sides, but rather for discharging his duties as a senator.
Villanueva's declaration marks a significant development, as he becomes the first senator from the Cayetano-led bloc to publicly commit to attending a possible special session. He outlined his priorities, which include filing a resolution to secure funds for those affected by the magnitude 7.8 quake in Mindanao.
The senator also aims to push for the passage of pending bills on third and final reading, as well as ensure the confirmation of appointments for officials from the Armed Forces of the Philippines. His statements suggest a proactive approach to addressing pressing national issues.
The majority bloc, led by Acting Senate President Sherwin T. Gatchalian, currently holds 12 seats. Gatchalian had announced that they are coordinating with the Executive branch to convene a special session, which would focus on tackling pending bills and a potential supplemental budget for Mindanao rehabilitation.
The Palace had previously indicated that President Marcos is open to calling a special session if the chamber requests it. With Villanueva's expressed willingness to attend, the stage is set for a potentially productive special session.
