UMVA has learned that a tragic case of murder has shaken the community, as 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa was convicted of stabbing 18-year-old Henry Nowak to death in a brutal attack.
The shocking crime was captured on police bodycam footage, which shows Henry repeatedly telling officers that he had been stabbed and was struggling to breathe before collapsing unconscious.
Digwa's deceitful claims to police, including lying about being the victim, added to Henry's suffering, leaving him "dying alone, humiliated and handcuffed" as he lay in a pool of his own blood.
The prosecution revealed that Digwa had filmed Henry trying to escape, scaling a fence, and landing on a car, as well as recording his own voice saying "I am a bad man" moments before the knife attack.
The attack, which included two stab wounds to Henry's legs and a fatal wound to his heart, was sparked by a verbal altercation between the two men.
Digwa was also convicted of carrying a ceremonial knife with a 21cm blade in a public place, and was sentenced to life in prison by Judge William Mousley KC.
The judge condemned Digwa's actions, stating that he had "robbed Henry of all those he loved, all the things he cared about and liked to do," and that he had brought "misery and a lifetime of loss" upon Henry's family.
Henry's family described him as a vibrant and ambitious young man, full of life and promise, whose future was cruelly taken away.
His mother, Lucy, read a statement to the court, expressing the devastating impact of his loss on their family and the pain that they will carry for the rest of their lives.
Henry's sister, Olivia, addressed Digwa directly, saying "If you had known him, you would never have hurt him," and describing her brother as "funny, handsome, precious and kind".
Outside the court, Henry's father, Mark, called on the government to treat knife crime as a national emergency, stating that "justice alone is not enough" and that they will not let this tragedy go.
The case has sparked widespread outrage, with Sir Keir Starmer expressing his condolences to Henry's loved ones and calling for an end to the cycle of tragedy caused by knife crime.
