Brazilian Low-Cost Carrier Targets New York Travelers

Brazilian carrier Gol has inaugurated its first flights to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, operating three weekly services from Rio de Janeiro’s Galeão International Airport. The launch marks a shift to larger aircraft and a broader international reach.

CEO Celso Ferrer highlighted the move as a new phase aimed at a more premium customer experience. The airline plans to add five twin‑aisle Airbus A330‑900s and launch four long‑haul routes this year, beginning with Lisbon, Orlando and Paris.

Initial services will be flown on A330s operated by Wamos Air until Gol receives its own aircraft toward year’s end. The company’s expansion follows a history of low‑fare, no‑frills operations on an all‑Boeing 737 fleet.

Gol’s new long‑haul capability allows it to serve destinations that were previously unreachable from Rio with smaller planes. The airline is building a hub at Galeão and already operates flights to Miami and Orlando from Brasília.

From JFK, passengers will find connections to 15 destinations across Brazil and South America, with plans to expand to 25 markets. The airline aims to increase service to JFK from three weekly round trips to daily once more aircraft join the fleet.

Market share projections indicate that the new JFK route will account for about 15% of U.S.–Brazil seats in July, dropping to roughly 8% for the full year. LATAM and American currently hold larger shares of the market.

Gol’s partnership with American Air allows AAdvantage members to earn points and access premium lounges on its business‑class flights. Discussions about a potential joint venture remain open, though no formal agreement is in place.

New A330s will feature lie‑flat business‑class suites in a 1‑2‑1 configuration, designed with a minimalist aesthetic and Brazilian culinary touches. In‑flight Wi‑Fi will be provided by Panasonic.

The expansion reflects Gol’s ambition to transform from a low‑cost carrier to a global airline with premium offerings, leveraging its Smiles loyalty program and international partnerships to drive growth.
