TRUTH EXPLODES: Regis Korchinski-Paquet Case Reopened!

TRUTH EXPLODES: Regis Korchinski-Paquet Case Reopened!

A formal inquest will be held into the 2020 death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, a 29-year-old Toronto woman who tragically fell from a 24th-floor balcony. The announcement came from Ontario’s chief coroner, Dr. Richard Wells, promising a deeper examination of the events leading to her death.

The incident unfolded on May 27, 2020, after police responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic dispute at an apartment on High Park Avenue. Korchinski-Paquet’s mother, in a desperate plea to the emergency operator, requested both her children be removed from the residence, detailing a volatile situation involving thrown bottles and brandished knives.

Just minutes later, Korchinski-Paquet herself contacted 911, claiming she was under attack. This prompted a heightened response from police dispatch, labeling the situation a “hotshot” call and relaying information about potential weapons and the individuals’ alleged intoxication.

Further 911 calls revealed a complex and escalating scenario. Korchinski-Paquet’s brother also reported a physical altercation, accusing his sister of aggression with knives. Records also indicated she had experienced epileptic seizures earlier that day, adding another layer of concern for responding officers.

As officers attempted to speak with Korchinski-Paquet about her medical history, the situation took a devastating turn. She reportedly used an air conditioner to barricade the balcony door, then moved onto the balcony itself and began attempting to climb over the railing.

Officers immediately ordered a retreat from the apartment, recognizing the immediate danger. Almost instantly, emergency medical services were dispatched as Korchinski-Paquet fell to the ground below. The scene was one of immediate tragedy and profound questions.

Initial claims from some family members alleged that police were responsible for Korchinski-Paquet’s death, suggesting she had been thrown from the balcony. However, a thorough investigation by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) ultimately cleared the officers of any wrongdoing.

The SIU director stated that Korchinski-Paquet had not expressed any suicidal intent and was actively portraying herself as a victim of assault. While acknowledging her distress and potentially disorderly behavior, the report concluded that her actions did not justify any use of force by the responding officers.

Korchinski-Paquet’s death occurred during a period of intense scrutiny and unrest surrounding police interactions with the Black community, coming just days after the death of George Floyd. Her case quickly became a focal point for those demanding accountability and systemic change.

The upcoming inquest aims to provide a comprehensive public examination of the events, offering a detailed account of what transpired and potentially identifying areas for improvement in how similar situations are handled in the future. It represents a commitment to understanding the full context of this tragic loss.
