LONDON MARATHON 2026: YOUR CITY. LOCKED DOWN. SEE THE MAP.

LONDON MARATHON 2026: YOUR CITY. LOCKED DOWN. SEE THE MAP.

The energy of London will surge this Sunday as thousands of runners prepare to tackle the iconic 26.2-mile marathon course. A wave of anticipation is building, not just for the athletes, but for the vibrant crowds lining the streets, ready to cheer them on.

This year’s route is a spectacular showcase of the city, beginning in Greenwich Park and Blackheath. Runners will journey past historic landmarks – the Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, the Shard, Big Ben, and the Tower of London – each a powerful symbol of London’s enduring spirit. The finish line awaits on The Mall, a triumphant culmination of dedication and endurance.

However, this incredible event necessitates significant road closures across the capital. Careful planning is essential for anyone traveling in or around central London on Sunday. Understanding these disruptions will be key to navigating the city smoothly.

Closures begin early, with Charlton Way and Shooters Hill Road shutting down as early as 4:00 AM. St John’s Park will follow at 7:00 AM, and a cascade of road closures will ripple outwards as the race progresses. Key arteries like Woolwich Church Street and Trafalgar Road will be impacted for several hours.

Tower Bridge itself will be closed to traffic for an extended period, from 8:00 AM to 8:30 PM, allowing spectators to fully enjoy the spectacle of runners crossing this iconic landmark. Major routes like The Highway and Commercial Road will also experience lengthy closures.

For those relying on public transport, the London Underground, Overground, and DLR will be operating increased services to accommodate the crowds. Expect significant congestion, particularly on the Jubilee, Circle, District lines, and the DLR. The Waterloo & City line will be entirely closed, and partial closures are planned for the Piccadilly line.

Transport for London strongly advises travelers to plan their journeys in advance, utilizing the TfL website or app for real-time updates. A helpful reminder: runners displaying their official bibs can travel for free on the Tube and buses, a small token of appreciation for their incredible effort.

Bus routes along the marathon course will be subject to diversions or shortened journeys. Checking the TfL website for bus status updates is crucial for anyone planning to travel by bus.

The race is scheduled to begin with the Elite Wheelchair class at approximately 8:50 AM, followed by the Elite Women at 9:05 AM and the Elite Men at 9:35 AM. The mass participation event will then unfold between 9:35 AM and 11:30 AM, staggered according to runners’ predicted finish times.

Runners have a generous eight-hour window to complete the course. Those exceeding this time will be guided to continue on the pavement, with support from London Marathon staff to reach the finish line, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to experience the thrill of completion.
