Surge in Air Conditioning Sales as Record Heatwave Drives Demand, Installation Rates Triple

The UK is experiencing its hottest June on record, with temperatures climbing to 36.7C, prompting a surge in demand for air conditioning units. According to reports, enquiries for home units have increased by 300% with some installers experiencing a transformational spike in demand.

Installers, such as Aircon Services in Tamworth, are struggling to keep up with the bookings as people rush to snap up portable units to escape the heat. The firm's co-founder, Marc Newbold, notes that air conditioning is starting to be viewed as a necessity rather than a luxury, with people no longer willing to tolerate the heat.

The numbers point to a structural shift in consumer demand, rather than a one-off summer scramble. Just 4% of homes in England currently have air conditioning, but the National Housing Federation predicts that 90% of UK homes will overheat by 2050. This is due to the fact that British housing stock has historically been designed to trap heat in rather than keep it out, leaving millions of properties poorly suited to the more frequent and intense heatwaves driven by climate change.

Air conditioning firms say business is booming, with one reporting that enquiries for home units have climbed by 300% as Britain swelters through its hottest June on record.

Overheating occurs when indoor temperatures rise to an uncomfortable level, typically above 25C to 27C, and can have serious health implications. The National Housing Federation warns that prolonged exposure to high indoor temperatures is linked to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, cardiovascular problems, sleep disturbance and mental health issues.

As a result, many homeowners are opting to install air conditioning at home, with some viewing it as an investment in comfort rather than an expense. While the upfront cost can be significant, with cooling a small bedroom running to around £1,500, the units are designed to last around 15 years, making it a more viable option for those looking to escape the heat.

The surge in demand for air conditioning is having a profound impact on smaller operators, with some installers experiencing a significant increase in bookings. The lesson for owner-managers is that repeated heatwaves are quietly rewriting consumer demand, from the retail sales lift that fans and cooling products enjoy to the longer-term maintenance and servicing market that follows every new installation.

As the UK continues to experience more frequent and intense heatwaves, the demand for air conditioning is likely to remain strong. For those positioned to meet this demand, the heat is reshaping their order books, even as the wider economy counts the cost of soaring temperatures on small businesses and productivity.
