Grief can shatter a person, leaving them adrift in a sea of sorrow. But for one young athlete, loss became the fuel for an extraordinary triumph.
Albert delos Santos, a Filipino weightlifter, faced unimaginable hardship heading into the IWF World Junior Championships in Ismailia, Egypt – the recent passing of his father, Alvin, and a debilitating back injury sustained just a week before the competition.
Despite the crushing weight of his sorrow and physical pain, delos Santos displayed a resolve that defied expectation. He lifted with a ferocity born of dedication and remembrance, determined to honor his father’s memory.
In the boys’ 71 kg section, delos Santos began with a 136 kg snatch. Then, summoning every ounce of strength, he exploded through a 175 kg clean and jerk, followed by a breathtaking, record-setting 186 kg lift.
The combined total of 326 kg secured him not one, but two gold medals – a stunning victory that left his competition far behind. He defeated Yash Khandagale of Iran by a remarkable 17 kg.
“I did it for him,” delos Santos said, his voice thick with emotion, referring to his father who succumbed to liver cancer just months prior. His miraculous recovery from the back injury felt almost destined, a sign that he was meant to be on that platform.
The 19-year-old from Zamboanga, already an Asian junior champion, has now firmly established himself as a rising star. Experts are already predicting a future Olympic medal for this young man.
Another Filipino athlete, Angeline Colonia, also shone brightly, earning a pair of silver medals in the women’s 48 kg snatch and total, adding to the nation’s impressive showing.
