Nancy Guthrie update: Retired K-9 officer says decision not to use cadaver dogs ‘defies logic’

The silence is deafening. Seven weeks have passed since 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Tucson home, and a retired K-9 investigator is voicing a growing frustration: why haven’t cadaver dogs been deployed to search for her?

Michael Gould, a veteran of the NYPD and Nassau County Police Department, doesn’t mince words. He calls the decision “defies logic.” These highly trained dogs, considered a scientific instrument by the courts, are the most effective tool we have for locating missing persons, especially when time is slipping away.

Guthrie’s disappearance, as described by Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, suggests she was taken against her will in the early hours of February 1st. The initial response included borrowed K-9 units from Border Patrol, but their deployment has since been halted, fueling speculation and anxiety.

Gould believes this pause speaks volumes. “There’s only two assumptions,” he explains, “either she’s still alive, or they’ve given up searching.” He implores the sheriff to either utilize the dogs in a comprehensive search or provide a clear explanation for their continued absence.

The details are chillingly sparse. A faint trail of blood was found outside Guthrie’s door, confirmed to be hers. Her Nest doorbell camera, now recovered with FBI assistance, captured footage of a masked suspect visiting the property weeks before the abduction – on January 11th, to be exact.

This suspect, described as being between 5’9” and 5’10” with a medium build, remains unidentified. A man was briefly detained and his vehicle searched, but released without charges, adding to the frustrating lack of concrete progress.

The investigation initially operated under the assumption of a kidnapping, justifying aggressive search warrants that drew scrutiny. But as weeks turn into a month and a half, Gould believes the reality is far more grim. He states the case no longer aligns with the typical profile of an abduction.

Savannah Guthrie, Nancy’s daughter and a “Today” show host, publicly acknowledged the heartbreaking possibility that her mother may no longer be alive in a poignant Instagram video. Her mother’s pacemaker last registered a signal at 2:30 a.m. on the night she disappeared.

Despite the dwindling leads, a task force comprised of Pima County homicide detectives and FBI agents remains actively engaged. Gould remains cautiously optimistic, stating, “If there’s tips coming in, it’s not a cold case.”

He emphasizes that rarely does a crime involve only one individual. Information could surface from unexpected sources – a jail inmate, a family member, a former partner, or even an accomplice. Every piece of information, no matter how small, could be crucial.

Currently, a mixed DNA sample is undergoing analysis at a private lab in Florida, and Gould predicts genetics will ultimately unlock the truth. He firmly believes a resolution is coming, and that the outcome will be profoundly surprising.

A substantial reward exceeding $1.2 million is being offered for information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s recovery. The family desperately seeks answers, urging anyone with knowledge of the case to come forward.
