Perplexity Just KICKED Open Source to the Curb!

Perplexity Just KICKED Open Source to the Curb!

The dream is simple, yet profound: a personal AI assistant. Not just a chatbot, but a digital team managing my life – sifting through emails, scheduling appointments, tracking news, building to-do lists, and proactively tackling tasks. The idea feels inevitable, a natural extension of technology’s promise.

But the path to this digital utopia is riddled with challenges. Early attempts, like OpenClaw, sparked excitement but proved difficult to manage and potentially dangerous. Installation was complex, control was limited, and the risk of unintended consequences – like a wiped inbox – loomed large, all while presenting security vulnerabilities.

Perplexity’s Personal Computer emerges as a potential solution, aiming to refine the OpenClaw concept. Built with transparency and security in mind, it operates within a “sandbox,” a protected environment designed to prevent mishaps and safeguard data. It promises the power of a personal AI team, but with a safety net.

However, access to this powerful tool comes at a steep price. It’s not available to free Perplexity users, nor is it included in their standard $20/month Pro plan. The Personal Computer is exclusively offered through Perplexity’s Max tier, a staggering $200 per month.

As someone who dedicates their work to covering AI, I’m still bound by personal financial realities. A self-imposed limit of $20/month for any single AI service – currently allocated to ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini – makes the $200 price tag prohibitive. The desire to explore the technology doesn’t outweigh the cost.

The high price may reflect the true cost of running sophisticated AI agents. These agents consume vast amounts of “AI tokens” – the computational resources needed to process information and perform tasks. A team of agents could quickly rack up substantial expenses.

Perplexity may be preemptively addressing concerns similar to those surrounding Anthropic’s Claude Pro. Users of Claude Pro have reported rapidly exhausting their usage allotments when utilizing agentic AI tools, receiving only limited access to powerful features. It’s a tantalizing glimpse of potential, quickly curtailed by usage limits.

The reality is becoming clear: truly functional agentic AI – tools capable of coding assistance and comprehensive personal management – likely requires a significant monthly investment, potentially exceeding $100. This is the current pricing landscape, absent a major breakthrough in AI efficiency.

For many, including myself, these advanced AI tools remain frustratingly out of reach. The cost simply doesn’t align with everyday financial priorities – groceries, utilities, and entertainment take precedence. The dream of a personal AI assistant, for now, remains a luxury.
