The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has made a significant seizure of firearms, ammunition, and narcotics at the Thousand Islands Bridge port of entry in Ontario.
Two individuals, a 59-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman, were stopped on May 23 while attempting to enter Canada in a motorhome towing a pickup truck. Initially, they claimed to have made a wrong turn and denied having any firearms or narcotics to declare.
However, a secondary search of the vehicle revealed that the driver had admitted to possessing a firearm in the motorhome. CBSA officers then conducted a thorough search and allegedly found eight firearms, four of which were prohibited, 13 magazines, including seven prohibited over-capacity magazines, 1,500 rounds of ammunition, and personal amounts of narcotics, including cocaine, psilocybin, and cannabis.
The two individuals, Daniel Sargent and Danette Garrelts, were arrested and charged with multiple offences, including failing to report goods, making false statements, smuggling, and possession of controlled substances. Their charges include 30 counts in total.
As a result of the seizure, Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree praised the CBSA's efforts in protecting Canada's borders and stopping the importation of illegal firearms. He thanked the officers at the Lansdowne port of entry for their work in safeguarding the security of all Canadians.
The accused were remanded into custody and are scheduled to appear in court on July 31 to face the charges against them.
