"Every day there's a debate within the party about the path forward," Slotkin said in an appearance on a popular radio show. She argued that significant new leadership is necessary to move the party forward, particularly in the House and Senate.
Slotkin pointed out that in 2024, Democrats were soundly defeated, despite her own victory in a swing state. She attributed this to the party's attempt to prioritize too many issues and answer every question, leaving voters unclear about the party's true values.
Slotkin contrasted this approach with Donald Trump's 2024 campaign, which focused on a single message: making Americans' lives more affordable and putting more money in their pockets. She suggested that Democrats could learn from this approach and focus on the issues that matter most to voters.
Slotkin's call for new leadership comes as Democratic socialists and progressive candidates have posted victories in recent primaries, emphasizing issues like affordability and improving conditions for working-class residents. Despite efforts by Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin to ease tensions within the party, Slotkin believes a broader change in leadership is necessary for a meaningful shift.
Slotkin's comments come ahead of a Senate election in which Democrats will choose a new party leader through a secret ballot after the general election in November.
