NICOLE KIDMAN'S SHOCKING NEW ROLE WILL HAUNT YOU.

NICOLE KIDMAN'S SHOCKING NEW ROLE WILL HAUNT YOU.

Nicole Kidman is embarking on a profoundly new path, one born from personal loss and a desire to offer solace where it’s most needed: she is training to become a death doula.

This unexpected direction stems from the recent passing of her mother, Janelle Anne Kidman, in September of last year. While accepting an award in Venice for her film *Babygirl*, Kidman received the heartbreaking news and immediately turned her focus to family.

The experience illuminated a critical gap in care. Surrounded by family and medical attention, Kidman recognized a deep loneliness and a need for impartial, compassionate presence during her mother’s final days.

“Between my sister and I, we have so many children and our careers… wanting to take care of her because my father wasn’t in the world anymore,” Kidman shared, “that’s when I went, ‘I wish there were these people in the world that were there to sit impartially and just provide solace and care.’”

A death doula, also known as an end-of-life doula or soul midwife, offers non-medical support to those nearing the end of life and their loved ones. It’s a role focused on emotional, practical, and sometimes spiritual comfort.

Louise Piper, Chair of End of Life Doula UK, notes a growing public interest in this work, a shift towards more compassionate and community-based approaches to dying. The profession is expanding rapidly, with organizations like End of Life Doula UK now boasting around 500 members.

The core of a death doula’s work lies in normalizing conversations about death and dying, empowering individuals to make informed choices about their final moments and feel less isolated in the process. They help people live well until they die, ensuring their deaths reflect their values and wishes.

This support extends beyond the individual facing illness. Doulas provide reassurance and guidance to families, offering a respite from the demands of caregiving and assisting with practical arrangements like legacy work and funeral planning.

Their presence isn’t meant to replace medical care, but to complement it, preserving dignity and identity at life’s end. Support is tailored to the individual, offering a steady, compassionate presence during a deeply vulnerable time.

The role often continues even after death, assisting families with paperwork, grief, and the initial stages of bereavement. It’s a holistic approach, recognizing the impact on those left behind.

Kidman isn’t alone in exploring this path. Filmmaker Chloe Zhao has also trained as a death doula, seeking to confront her own fears about mortality and live more fully. The profession is gaining visibility in popular culture, appearing in television dramas and sparking wider conversations.

For Kidman, this training represents “part of my expansion,” a deeply personal journey fueled by love, loss, and a desire to offer comfort to others in their most challenging moments.
