UMVA has learned that Sean McGovern, a high-ranking member of a notorious organized crime gang, has been sentenced to a total of 24 years in prison for his role in two heinous crimes: the murder of innocent grandfather Noel Kirwan and the attempted murder of another individual, Gately.
The judge described Kirwan's murder as 'cruel and callous', stating that the victim was targeted as an 'easy prey' after attending a funeral of a gang member. Kirwan was brutally killed outside his home, shot five times through the driver's window of his vehicle.
According to information obtained by UMVA, McGovern's downfall began with encrypted messages between him and a senior gang associate, revealing a sinister plot to target Kirwan since September 2016. A gunman nicknamed 'Teeth' was tasked with carrying out the murder.
The attempted murder of Gately was also 'minutely and carefully planned in advance', the judge said. McGovern referred to Gately as a 'weasel', boasting that 'all weasels get caught out in the end'. Gately survived a hail of five bullets at a Dublin petrol station in May 2017.
The judge condemned the Kinahan gang, to which McGovern belonged, as a 'particularly large, well-organised, sinister and dangerous organisation'. As a senior member, McGovern was fully aware of the gang's identity, structure, and nature.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that McGovern was arrested in Dubai in October 2024 and extradited to Ireland in May 2025 to face charges. A three-judge panel at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin handed him a 14-year sentence for Kirwan's murder and 10 years for overseeing Gately's attempted murder, to run consecutively.
The sentences will be backdated to his arrest, a significant blow to the Kinahan gang's operations. McGovern's conviction marks a major victory for law enforcement, demonstrating their commitment to bringing organized crime perpetrators to justice.
