RUSSIA'S SHIPS: BRITAIN STRIKES BACK!

RUSSIA'S SHIPS: BRITAIN STRIKES BACK!

A ghostly armada sails the seas, a hidden fleet of over a thousand aging tankers. These vessels, draped in the flags of other nations, operate in the shadows, quietly moving Russian oil and goods beyond the reach of Western sanctions.

The UK has now authorized a bold new strategy: the seizure of these “shadow fleet” vessels. This decisive action, announced as the Prime Minister traveled to a security summit in Finland, aims to cut off the financial lifeline fueling the conflict in Ukraine.

For years, British forces have been meticulously tracking these ships, gathering intelligence and quietly assisting allies in their efforts. This isn’t a sudden escalation, but a formalization of a long-running, covert operation.

People look out at an oil tanker formerly known as the Bella-1, before it changed its name to the Marinera, from Hopeman Harbour, at sea in the Moray Firth, northern Scotland, on January 14, 2026. Britain said on January 7, it provided "enabling support" during a US operation to seize the Russian-flagged oil tanker in the North Atlantic, which was condemned by Moscow. The seized tanker had been sanctioned by Washington under measures targeting Iran, and had been "initially flying a false flag", according to the Ministry of Defence. The Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), a powerful military alliance of ten northern European nations led by the UK, stands ready to defend against potential Russian aggression. Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden join the UK in this unified front.

January saw a significant victory with the seizure of the Marinera, formerly known as the Bella-1. American forces, bolstered by RAF aircraft and the British supply ship RFA Tideforce, intercepted the Russian-flagged tanker in the vast expanse of the Atlantic.

The Royal Navy’s HMS Dagger played a crucial role later that month, assisting the French in seizing the sanctioned ship, the Grinch, after a tense pursuit through the Strait of Gibraltar. This collaborative effort highlights the growing international resolve.

Just last week, the French intercepted the Deyna oil tanker in the Mediterranean, again with vital support from the UK. These coordinated actions demonstrate a tightening net around Russia’s attempts to circumvent sanctions.

The dangers are real. A suspected shadow fleet tanker, carrying liquefied natural gas, was recently found adrift in the Mediterranean, believed to have been damaged in a drone strike. Libyan authorities intervened to tow the vessel, averting a potential environmental disaster.

At the JEF summit, leaders are focused on bolstering security in the strategically important High North and coordinating a unified response to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The shadow fleet is a key piece of this complex puzzle.

The Carrier Strike Group is the Royal Navy's key deployment of 2025. Led by UK flagship HMS Prince of Wales and involving a dozen nations, the eight-month mission - known as Operation Highmast - will take the task group to the western Pacific Rim via the Mediterranean and Middle East with a series of large-scale exercises with Britain's allies and partners. The goal is to reaffirm the UK?s commitment to the security of the Mediterranean and Indo-Pacific region, demonstrate collective resolve with our allies and showcase British trade and industry. Over the course of the deployment, upwards of 4,500 British military personnel will be involved, including nearly 600 RAF and 900 soldiers alongside 2,500 Royal Navy sailors and Royal Marines.

The move signals a clear message: those who facilitate Russia’s war efforts will face consequences. The UK, alongside its allies, is determined to dismantle this shadow network and starve Putin’s regime of the resources it needs to continue its aggression.
