UMVA has learned that a shocking breach of medical confidentiality has occurred at a prestigious London hospital, where a worker accessed the private medical records of Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, just weeks after she underwent surgery in 2024.
The alleged breach involved a hospital worker at the London Clinic, who, along with three other employees, accessed Kate's medical records without authorization. An internal investigation led to the dismissal of all four individuals from their roles.
The London Clinic, a renowned private hospital with a long history of treating the royal family and A-list celebrities, has a reputation for providing high-end medical care. However, this incident has raised serious concerns about the security of patient information.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has concluded its investigation into the breach, issuing a formal caution to a former healthcare worker – a nurse – for deliberately misusing highly sensitive personal information and offering to disclose it for financial gain.
The ICO's investigation revealed a clear breach of trust, and the regulator emphasized that people should be able to trust that their personal information is safe and protected from exploitation in healthcare settings. The ICO's executive director for regulatory supervision stated that the law allows for action to be taken when this trust is broken.
The incident took place around three weeks after Kate's abdominal surgery, and the Prince and Princess of Wales were made aware of the breach at the time. A source described the breach as "a major security breach and incredibly damaging for the hospital, given its unblemished reputation for treating members of the Royal Family."
The CEO of the London Clinic responded to the incident, stating that everyone at the hospital is acutely aware of their duties regarding patient confidentiality and that systems are in place to monitor the management of patient information. The CEO emphasized that there is no place at the hospital for those who intentionally breach the trust of patients or colleagues.
