MAFS EXPERT UNDER FIRE: Groom's SHOCK Claim Rocks Show!

MAFS EXPERT UNDER FIRE: Groom's SHOCK Claim Rocks Show!

John Aiken, the familiar face fromMarried At First Sight Australia, now faces a new challenge: mandatory counselling. The decision stems from a formal complaint lodged by a former contestant, raising serious questions about the boundaries of his role on the controversial reality show.

Aiken has been a mainstay of the program since its inception in 2015, known for his direct critiques and unwavering stance on accountability within the couples. He built a reputation for dissecting relationship dynamics and confronting problematic behaviors, a persona carefully cultivated over thirteen seasons.

The complaint originates from Ben Walters, a participant in the 2024 season, whose pairing with Ellie Dix proved tumultuous. Walters alleges that Aiken’s on-screen conduct and commentary crossed ethical lines, potentially violating the standards expected of a registered psychologist.

Walters detailed his concerns, stating he was “troubled by aspects of his on-screen behaviour” after undergoing four sessions with Aiken. He believes Aiken continued to leverage his professional background to influence public perception, despite a previous ruling.

This isn’t the first time Aiken’s professional credentials have been scrutinized. In 2017, he was prohibited from identifying as a psychologist or practicing psychology *on* the show itself. Yet, Walters argues that Aiken’s advice and commentary still implicitly draw upon his expertise.

The core of Walters’ argument centers on the show’s inherent conflict and drama, suggesting it clashes with the ethical principles of the Australian Psychological Society. He questions whether participation in such a program can truly align with responsible psychological practice.

The Psychology Board of New South Wales, after reviewing the complaint in December, agreed to close the case – but with a significant condition: Aiken must undergo counselling. A record of the complaint will remain on file, ready for review should further concerns arise.

Walters’ own experience on the show was cut short, and his interactions with Dix drew criticism from viewers. He has since spoken publicly about the negative impact of his time on the program, alleging that his ADHD was even subject to ridicule by producers.

He revealed on a podcast that producers allegedly mocked his ADHD and even drove him to walk out of an interview. The situation highlights the intense pressures and potential for exploitation within the reality television landscape.

The outcome underscores the complex intersection of entertainment, psychological expertise, and ethical responsibility. It raises crucial questions about the role of professionals on reality TV and the potential impact on both participants and the viewing public.
