Senator Tommy Tuberville disclosed details about the circumstances surrounding the death of former Senator Lindsey Graham.
Tuberville said a former staff member, who had previously worked for both him and Graham, called emergency services after experiencing chest pains.
The staff member reported the pain to Tuberville, was instructed to call 911, and emergency responders arrived promptly at the scene.
Medical officials later determined that Graham died from an aortic dissection caused by arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, a life‑threatening tear in the main artery.
In his final days, Graham postponed medical care to fulfill scheduled appearances, including an interview on a national news program, stating he needed to complete pending legislative work before seeking treatment.
The Senate chamber saw an outpouring of tributes on the first day back after the July holiday, with colleagues recalling his dedication to public service.
Graham’s Senate desk, formerly occupied by a longtime colleague, was draped with a black veil and a bowl of white roses.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune delivered an emotional statement, noting the profound loss felt throughout the chamber.
Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, will assume his seat temporarily following an appointment by the South Carolina governor.
