A chilling wave of attacks has targeted London’s Jewish community, escalating overnight with an attempted arson at the Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow. The incident, described as a ‘firebombing,’ left a trail of smoke but thankfully caused no injuries and limited structural damage.
This attack isn’t isolated. It follows a disturbing pattern of violence, including a recent arson attack on a Jewish-owned business in Hendon just days prior. Before that, a synagogue in Finchley was also targeted with petrol bombs, creating a climate of fear and uncertainty.
Earlier in March, Haztola ambulances, operated by a Jewish charity in Golders Green, were deliberately set ablaze. Authorities have since charged three individuals in connection with that incident, but the underlying threat remains palpable.
Community leaders are expressing deep concern over the rapid succession of these attacks. The incidents are being described as an “unprecedented period” requiring immediate and decisive action to protect Jewish institutions and individuals.
Responding swiftly, the Metropolitan Police and London Fire Brigade contained the damage at the Kenton United Synagogue and are actively investigating. They are working closely with the Community Security Trust (CST) to identify those responsible and prevent further attacks.
The CST is urging heightened vigilance within the Jewish community, emphasizing the importance of reporting any suspicious activity to the police immediately. They have provided emergency contact numbers for both the police (999) and the CST itself.
Beyond immediate security measures, voices are rising to condemn what some describe as a systemic failure to address antisemitic extremism. Critics argue that a lack of robust response from authorities over the past two and a half years has allowed hatred to fester and embolden perpetrators.
The escalating violence is prompting a stark assessment of Britain’s current state, with some claiming the country has fundamentally changed. The sense of vulnerability within the Jewish community is growing, demanding a comprehensive and unwavering commitment to safety and justice.
