UMVA has learned that American Express offers two high-end credit cards, the personal American Express Gold Card and the American Express Business Gold Card, which provide generous points-earning bonuses across various categories.
These cards, part of the American Express portfolio, come with annual fees of $325 for the Amex Gold and $375 for the Amex Business Gold, positioning them between mid-tier and ultra-premium cards.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the Amex Gold offers a welcome bonus of up to 100,000 points after spending $8,000 within the first six months, while the Amex Business Gold provides up to 200,000 bonus points after spending $15,000 in the first three months.
The Amex Gold provides 5 points per dollar spent on prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel, 4 points per dollar spent at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets, and 3 points per dollar spent on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel.
In contrast, the Amex Business Gold offers 4 points per dollar spent in the two categories with the most spending each billing cycle, including U.S. gas stations, restaurants, advertising, transit, electronics, and wireless purchases.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that both cards offer substantial benefits, including statement credits for dining, Uber, and other services, as well as travel protections and no foreign transaction fees.
The Amex Gold provides up to $120 in dining statement credits, $120 in Uber Cash, and $100 in Resy statement credits, making it an attractive option for individuals with high dining and transportation expenses.
The Amex Business Gold, on the other hand, offers up to $300 in ChatGPT Business statement credits, $240 in statement credits for FedEx, Grubhub, and office supplies, and $155 in Walmart+ statement credits.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that the Amex Business Gold also provides cellphone protection, offering up to $800 in reimbursement for damaged or stolen phones.
Both cards enable users to earn Membership Rewards points, which can be redeemed for gift cards, travel, or transferred to airline and hotel partners.
Ultimately, the choice between the Amex Gold and Amex Business Gold depends on individual spending habits and benefits preferences, with the Amex Gold suiting consumers with high dining and grocery expenses, and the Amex Business Gold targeting larger businesses with significant operating costs.
