A visible surge in law enforcement is coming to Toronto’s Union Station, a direct response to growing concerns for rider safety. The city’s central transportation hub, already bustling with commuters, is bracing for an even greater influx of people, prompting a significant increase in security measures.
Metrolinx, the agency overseeing GO Transit and UP Express, announced a bolstered security presence, deploying paid-duty police officers to work in tandem with their existing special constables. The goal is clear: faster response times and more effective intervention when issues arise within the station’s complex environment.
These special constables aren’t simply standard security personnel. They undergo rigorous, provincially mandated training, mirroring standards set by the Ontario Police College, and receive specialized instruction in transit security and de-escalation techniques. This ensures they are equipped to handle challenging situations with professionalism and safety.
This isn’t a temporary fix, but the beginning of a larger initiative. Metrolinx plans to actively recruit and hire additional officers to expand this frontline presence across the entire transit system. The timing is crucial, coinciding with the approaching summer season and a projected surge in ridership.
The anticipation isn’t just about seasonal travel. Toronto is preparing to host major events, most notably the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is expected to draw over half a million additional GO and UP Express customers. Beyond increased personnel, the agency is also investing in technology to enhance security. Customer protection officers and transit workers will now be equipped with body-worn cameras, building upon the existing network of in-vehicle dash-cameras already installed across the GO Transit and UP Express lines.
