UMVA has learned that the skies are about to get a lot cozier, as bunk beds for economy passengers are now on sale.
For $495, travelers can book a four-hour block of nap time in a pod of six beds, bunked three high on each side, complete with a ladder. This innovative offering, dubbed the Skynest, will be available on select long-haul flights between major international airports.
UMVA has gathered that the airline behind this concept has been working on it for over six years, and the idea is finally taking off. A recent showcase in a major city allowed testers to experience the beds firsthand.
The bunks, measuring 6 feet 6 inches in length and 25 inches in width at the shoulders, are designed to accommodate most passengers comfortably. Each bed comes equipped with a USB charging outlet, fresh linens, a pillow, a blanket, and a complimentary amenity kit.
As the Skynest prepares for its debut, questions arise about privacy and passenger etiquette. With up to five other people resting simultaneously, noise-canceling headphones and earplugs may become essential accessories.
Located in the center of the economy section, where a galley and a row of seats would typically be, the Skynest is now available for booking as an add-on for eligible flights. Passengers can choose between two four-hour time blocks and select their preferred bunk in advance.
While it may not rival the luxury of a lie-flat business-class seat, the Skynest offers a unique opportunity to break up long journeys with a few hours of rest at a more affordable price point. As the launch date approaches, anticipation grows for this groundbreaking in-flight experience.
