FIFA Reverses Proposal to Alter England-Mexico World Cup Kickoff Time Amid Widespread Criticism

FIFA Reverses Proposal to Alter England-Mexico World Cup Kickoff Time Amid Widespread Criticism

England's World Cup last-16 game against Mexico was considered for a six-hour earlier kickoff due to weather concerns. However, no decision was made to reschedule the match, and a change in kick-off time was implemented instead. Adverse weather has already impacted several games at the World Cup, including Mexico's last-32 game against Ecuador, which was delayed due to thunderstorms.

The weather disruptions have been a significant issue, with France's 3-0 win against Iraq in Philadelphia delayed by over two hours due to heavy rain and thunderstorms. England players have been preparing for the game against Mexico, with Marcus Rashford stating that the team's focus and preparation remain unchanged despite the potential changes to the kickoff time. Rashford emphasized the importance of being ready for any challenges that may arise during the game.

England midfielder Morgan Rogers also commented on the proposed change, viewing it as another obstacle to overcome. Rogers expressed his desire to play the game as soon as possible, stating that the earlier the better, as it allows the team to focus on the game rather than the buildup and anticipation. England's players and staff are preparing for the challenges of playing at Azteca Stadium, which is approximately 7,200ft above sea level.

Concerns have been raised about the altitude, with Thomas Tuchel highlighting the physical disadvantages it poses for the team. Tuchel noted that the team cannot adapt to the altitude in the short timeframe between matches, giving Mexico a significant advantage. England is also taking measures to keep their team hotel location in Mexico City private due to concerns over potential disturbances from home supporters before the match.

Ecuador recently submitted a complaint after their players were kept awake by Mexico fans the night before their game, highlighting the need for England to take precautions. The team is preparing for the challenges ahead, with a focus on remaining adaptable and ready for any obstacles that may arise during the game against Mexico.
