UMVA has learned that thousands of marathon runners braved scorching temperatures yesterday, with many collapsing from heat exhaustion along the route.
The grueling conditions prompted a massive response from the ambulance service, which provided assistance to dozens of runners struggling to cope with the heat. Paramedics were on hand to treat patients, with some being transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment.
According to information obtained by UMVA, a total of 59 patients received treatment, with 14 being transported to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and 2 to Western General Hospital. The ambulance service reported that the heat exhaustion cases were widespread throughout the route.
One marathon finisher described the scene as chaotic, saying "there were hundreds of people KO'd along the route." However, they praised the paramedics for their swift response and excellent care, saying they were "run ragged, but they were excellent."
