Key Players to Take England's World Cup Penalties Revealed: A Data-Driven Analysis of the Three Lions' Record Holders

Key Players to Take England's World Cup Penalties Revealed: A Data-Driven Analysis of the Three Lions' Record Holders

The England team's penalty shootout record is a topic of interest ahead of the World Cup, with some players stepping up to the spot with more confidence than others.

Of the 26-man squad, 18 players have taken at least one penalty during their senior careers for club and country, and Harry Kane will likely be the first to take the spot, having scored his retake after a saved penalty in the opening game against Croatia.

However, there are other players who boast impressive penalty-taking records, including Ivan Toney, who has earned a reputation for his 'no look' technique, and Anthony Gordon, who has scored 16 of his 17 career penalties, a 94 per cent success rate.

Other strong contenders from the spot include Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka, who have both shown their ability to score penalties despite missing in the Euro 2020 final, and Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham, who have a high success rate when they do take penalties.

On the other hand, there are players who should be kept away from the penalty spot, including Ollie Watkins, who has a woeful 56 per cent conversion rate, and Eberechi Eze, who has missed three of his last four penalties, including a critical miss in the Champions League final against PSG.

Additionally, some players have never taken a penalty in their careers, including Quansah, Nico O'Reilly, Marc Guehi, Djed Spence, Trevoh Chalobah, Dan Burn, Dean Henderson, and James Trafford, making it unlikely they would be called upon to take a spot kick in a high-pressure situation.
