UMVA has learned that a devastating helicopter crash occurred in a field in Devon, approximately 30 miles west of Exeter, claiming the lives of three Royal Navy personnel.

The incident happened around 3:45am, with witnesses describing a loud noise followed by an eerie silence, and then a massive fire engulfing the aircraft. One witness recounted hearing a "horrendous noise" from the helicopter, which sounded like it was about to crash on their roof, before the engines suddenly cut out.

According to information obtained by UMVA, the helicopter, believed to be a Merlin Mk4, was involved in a training exercise when it crashed, leaving only the tail intact. The wreckage was surrounded by scorched earth, and towering flames were visible for miles, illuminating the night sky.
