The search for the next James Bond is underway, with a new round of auditions reportedly set to take place in August. The process is heating up, with several names in the running for the iconic role.
Former James Bond casting director Debbie McWilliams, who worked on 13 of the 25 Bond films, has weighed in on the latest search. With a wealth of expertise under her belt, she has a unique perspective on what makes a successful Bond.
McWilliams believes it's essential that the next Bond retains an air of mystery. "I don’t want to see any of them as Bond because we now know so much about them," she said. This means keeping their personal lives out of the spotlight and avoiding actors who are too well-known.
McWilliams' past casting choices have often been shrewd, selecting actors who were relatively unknown at the time. She recalls casting Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig, all of whom brought a unique quality to the role. "That helps enormously to see somebody who is completely out of the blue," she said of her approach.
In contrast, McWilliams is not optimistic about the chances of Callum Turner and Jacob Elordi, two actors who have gained popularity in recent years. "We want to know as little about them personally as possible, because that’s what spies are," she explained.
McWilliams also shared some lighter moments from her time as casting director, including encounters with Michael Jackson and Madonna. While she didn't reveal too much, she hinted at a more unusual candidate who almost landed the role.
As the search for the next Bond continues, McWilliams' words of wisdom offer a unique insight into what makes a successful Bond. Whether or not her preferred candidates will be chosen remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the next Bond will need to be someone who can embody the essence of the iconic character.
