A convicted attempted murderer, John Laidlaw, has vanished after escaping from an unsupervised work placement. The escape triggered an immediate and extensive search by authorities, raising concerns for public safety.
Laidlaw, originally from Hertfordshire, was serving time for a horrific 2006 shooting near Finsbury Park in London. He had been granted regular, unsupervised day release to work at a car valet service open to the public – a privilege exploited when he disappeared shortly after finishing a shift.
The details of the attack are chilling. Laidlaw, a former boxer, reportedly threatened to kill all Black people during the incident, unleashing a wave of violence that left three people injured. He first shot Abu Kamara, a social worker and father, in the neck.
Evans Baptiste, a 22-year-old who bravely pursued Laidlaw, was grazed by a bullet. Tragically, the same bullet then struck Emma Sheridan, a 26-year-old woman, in the back. The attack followed a prior admission of assaulting a Black motorist just weeks before.
Police are currently utilizing dogs, drones, and a meticulous review of CCTV footage in their desperate search. Laidlaw’s unfamiliarity with the area complicates the investigation, leaving authorities unsure of his potential destination or whether he may have already fled via the nearby Yarm train station.
Superintendent John Wrintmore urged the public to remain vigilant, stating that anyone who believes they have spotted Laidlaw should immediately contact the police by dialing 999 – and emphatically *not* to approach him. The situation remains fluid and a priority for law enforcement.
