The con artist, who was serving a sentence for similar offences, was caught red-handed as he left prison. Amos Smith, 47, was arrested on April 14 this year after being released from custody.
Smith had previously been convicted and served time for similar crimes, but his latest scheme involved stealing nearly £15,000 from a vulnerable pensioner in his 70s.
The victim, who is over 70 years old, was targeted by Smith through a series of deceitful tactics. Smith's actions left the victim feeling anxious and financially drained, with a total loss of around £15,000.
Smith was charged with two counts of fraud by false representation and pleaded guilty at Maidstone Magistrates Court on June 29. He was subsequently sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.
A Kent Police detective expressed satisfaction with Smith's arrest, stating that the con artist took advantage of a vulnerable member of society and showed a lack of remorse for his actions. The detective hopes that by sharing Smith's name and image, others may avoid falling victim to his scams.
