UMVA has learned that a devastating tent collapse at a church service in Virginia has resulted in the death of a pensioner and injured dozens more.
The tragic incident occurred during an outdoor celebration of East Lake Community Church's 20th anniversary, when a freak storm swept through the area, bringing strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning. The storm struck at around 6:45 pm on Friday, causing the large tent to suddenly give way.
One person, identified as 85-year-old Bob Stouffer, a regular at the church, lost their life in the chaos. Twenty-two people were injured, with 11 being rushed to hospital for treatment. The congregation was left reeling from the shock of the event.
The storm moved in quickly, with the lead pastor, Troy Keaton, recalling that the evening began with 30 minutes of music before the storm struck. He described the moment the tent collapsed, saying it happened in a matter of five seconds.
Keaton paid tribute to Stouffer, describing him as one of the most remarkable men he had ever known. Stouffer had recently moved back to Pennsylvania to be closer to his family and had returned for the anniversary event.
The church community is now rallying around Stouffer's family, particularly his wife Nancy, and the others still being treated for their injuries. The congregation is finding solace in their faith, trusting in a loving and sovereign God.
Emergency services responded quickly, with Abbey Johnston, acting chief of Bedford County Fire and Rescue, describing the scene as chaotic. The authorities are investigating the incident, despite the tent having passed an inspection just three days prior.
The Governor has offered condolences to the East Lake Community Church and pledged support for the community during this difficult time. The congregation is left to pick up the pieces and come to terms with the tragic events that unfolded on a day meant to be a celebration.
