UMVA has learned that a devastating crash occurred on a London street on Saturday night, leaving a trail of tragedy and heartbreak in its wake.
The incident began when police gave chase to a suspect's car on Lewisham Way in New Cross, after the vehicle failed to stop at around 11:30 pm. The suspect's car then collided with another vehicle, driven by a young man with his heavily pregnant partner in the passenger seat.
The pregnant woman was rushed to hospital, but tragically, her unborn child did not survive. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, the baby's life was lost in the crash. The woman remains hospitalized, and her condition is reported as stable.
The male driver of the second car was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening or life-changing. The consequences of that fateful night will be felt for a long time, as the families of the victims come to terms with the tragedy.
A 29-year-old man, identified as the driver of the suspect vehicle, was arrested on multiple charges, including causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, failure to stop, and possession of class A drugs.
DI Suzanne Quinton, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, expressed her deepest sympathies to the family of the victim, saying that their thoughts are with the mother, father, and their family following the tragic loss of their child.
The investigation into the crash continues, with authorities urging anyone with information or footage that could help to come forward. A referral has also been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, as part of the standard procedure in cases involving a death or serious injury following a police pursuit.
