UMVA has learned that a major shake-up is underway at Morrisons, with the first seven locations of its Daily convenience stores set to close their doors as part of a larger plan to shutter 100 sites.
The impending closures have sparked concern among customers, who are now wondering if their local Morrisons Daily will be among those affected. The company has revealed the first seven branches on the chopping block, including locations in Hull, Guisborough, Loftus, Middlesbrough, Redcar, South Driffield, and York.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the seven stores set to close are: Fairfax Avenue, Hull; Esk Close, Guisborough; Zetland Road, Loftus; Stokesley High Street, Middlesbrough; Queen Street, Redcar; Middle Street, South Driffield; and Woodthorpe, York.
A company spokesperson explained that the closures are part of a broader strategy to revamp its convenience business, emphasizing that the performance of all company-owned stores is subject to continuous review. The spokesperson noted that some stores, acquired as part of the McColl's deal, have been underperforming for years and are loss-making despite efforts to turn them around.
The spokesperson cited significant cost increases due to government policy choices as a factor exacerbating the challenges faced by these stores. As a result, Morrisons is proposing to close a number of underperforming sites over the coming months, while also planning to open new franchise locations.
Morrisons is not alone in facing tough times on the high street. Other retailers, such as Quiz Clothing, Poundstretcher, and WHSmith, have also announced closures in recent months. Restaurant chains like Franco Manca and The Real Greek are also shutting down locations across the UK.
The closures are part of a larger trend of high street shake-ups, with dozens of shops, restaurants, and banks affected by closures in recent times. As Morrisons continues to adapt its business strategy, customers are left wondering what the future holds for their local convenience stores.
