A key Republican primary has been decided in South Carolina, as Jenny Costa Honeycutt, a Charleston County Councilwoman and small business owner, has emerged victorious in the runoff for the 1st Congressional District. Honeycutt defeated state Rep. Mark Smith to secure her spot on the ballot. This sets her up for a general election showdown to succeed nationally known GOP Rep. Nancy Mace.
Mace, a longtime supporter of President Donald Trump, chose not to seek re-election this year, opting instead to run for governor. Her seat has been a Republican stronghold for over four decades, with notable past holders including now-Sen. Tim Scott and former Gov. Mark Sanford. The district covers much of South Carolina's coastal region.
Honeycutt and Smith were the top two finishers in a crowded GOP primary earlier this month, but no candidate managed to secure a majority. As a result, they advanced to a runoff election. Honeycutt describes herself as an "unapologetic conservative," aligning with traditional Republican values.
The general election will pit Honeycutt against the winner of the Democratic runoff between Mac Deford, an attorney, and retired Coast Guard Vice Admiral Nancy Lacore. Despite being considered the favorite, the Cook Political Report recently adjusted its rating of the race from "Solid Republican" to "Likely Republican," indicating a potentially competitive contest.
